Rumors Run Rampant

09/30/05

Several emails and blogs floating around of late have been brought to our attention regarding the Iberia Humane Society. Here was my reply:

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, or where you read that, but the Iberia Humane Society is a NO KILL shelter.

We are NOT ( repeat - NOT) euthanizing any animals. There is a lot of misinformation out there, and there are a lot of rumors. Please do not believe everything that you read or hear.

We try very hard to take care and treat our animals with love and care. I'm fostering a little rescued dog from St. Bernard parish now, and Dr. White GAVE me medicine and shampoo to treat him. We all have our hearts in this - Dr. white and his staff have waded through disease-infested water to save the lives of these animals. How could anyone think he would have them killed???

We moved out all our pre-existing abandoned and homeless animals to shelters upstate (such as New York, etc.) that welcomed them in with open arms. This was to make room for all the evacueed pets that we rescued. Our aim was to keep the animals close to home to make it easier for their owners to locate them.

We are keeping all our pets for at least three months to give their owners ample time to be reunited with their pets. I can't believe that people would even think that we would euthanized any of our animals. Please dispel these rumors.

The Iberia Humane Society is NO KILL shelter!

Update (09/30/05): All animals previously housed at the Sugarena,  have now been relocated to the Iberia Humane Society, 1314 Troy Road.

All rescues have ceased now. The flood waters have receded so quickly, that most evacuees are now back in their homes.

We will hold on to all rescued pets for a period of at least three months  from their rescue date. We realize that a lot of their owners are still displaced, and we want to allow adequate time for everyone to locate their pets.

Also, I'll will be meeting with Dr. Eric's rescue staff for photo updates of current rescues this weekend. Be sure to check back periodically for rescued dogs or rescued cats pages for newly-posted photos.

Letter from the editor:

I would like to apologize to everyone for my tardiness on the emails & updating the website. It's been a struggle trying to catch up after our evacuation from Hurricane Rita.

My girls and I were displaced for almost a week while waiting on the flood waters to recede. However, we sustained minimal damage from the storm surge, and I'm now back in my home with electricity, a/c & internet (yeaaaa!)

I will work as quickly as possible in getting to everyone who has written, and providing fresh information to the website as soon as I can. Everyone is working overtime to aide in saving the lives of those who mean so much to so many. And there are so many wonderful people out there who are helping to reunite them with their families. Thanks to each and every one of you.

If you've emailed us during the dates of September 22 - 26th and have not gotten a reply from us, then you may want to resend that email and let us know that you'd contacted us previously and have not heard back. With all the activity going on of late, it may have gotten overlooked. And we do not want to miss out on anyone's communication. Every email is important to us.

I know that you are anxious for updates and replies, but please realize that I'm a single mom, working two jobs - I volunteer my services as the website administrator. I do it for the animals;  They have no choice in the life they are given.

I would also like to let all of you who are searching for your lost pets know that Dr. White has said that we will be taking care of the pets we rescue, and won't be adopting  any for 3 months from date of rescue. He wants to give plenty of time for everyone to find their owners.

Also, we have discontinued search & rescue in St. Bernard Parish. We have, however, began rescues in Vermillion & Calcasieu Parishes. More info will be provided soon. (Unless we have another hurricane, that is.)

Thanks to everyone for your support and patience,
